What is Altair?
Translation: 'The flying one'
It is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila.
Aquila means 'the eagle' which is how it is depicted in the sky.
Aquila is named for the bird that belonged to Zeus
Two major novae have been observed in Aquila.
A nova is very old star that suddenly becomes bright again, regaining some of the former glory of its youth.
A supernova is a massive star exploding
Altair, Deneb and Vega form the summer triangle.
