What is Altair?

  • Translation: 'The flying one'
  • It is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila.
  • Aquila means 'the eagle' which is how it is depicted in the sky.
  • Aquila is named for the bird that belonged to Zeus
  • Two major novae have been observed in Aquila.
  • A nova is very old star that suddenly becomes bright again, regaining some of the former glory of its youth.
